Tire Flip: How to Do It & Muscles Worked
The tire flip is a full-body, explosive strength exercise that primarily targets the glutes, with significant involvement from the hamstrings, quadriceps, and core. It requires lifting and flipping a heavy tire, demanding power, coordination, and proper technique to perform safely.

How to do the tire flip
- Step 1: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, facing the tire.
- Step 2: Bend your knees and hinge at the hips, lowering into a squat position.
- Step 3: Reach down and grab the bottom edge of the tire with both hands, fingers facing towards you.
- Step 4: Engage your glutes and leg muscles, and explosively drive through your legs to lift the tire off the ground.
- Step 5: As the tire flips over, use your upper body strength to guide it and maintain control.
- Step 6: Once the tire is fully flipped, quickly step back and reset your stance.
- Step 7: Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Sets, reps and programming
| Goal | Sets | Reps | Rest | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strength | 3–5 | 3–6 | 3–5 min | 1–3 reps in reserve |
| Muscle growth | 3–4 | 6–12 | 2–3 min | 1–2 reps in reserve |
| Muscular endurance | 2–3 | 12–20 | 1–2 min | 1–3 reps in reserve |
Ranges follow the ACSM position stand on progression in resistance training. Muscle grows across a wide range of loads when sets end close to failure (Schoenfeld et al., 2017), longer rests between heavy sets support strength and size (Schoenfeld et al., 2016), and stopping a rep or two short of failure works about as well as training to failure (Grgic et al., 2022). Estimate your working weights with the strength calculators.
