GLP-1 nutrition

Nutrition and training on GLP-1 medication

GLP-1 medications reduce appetite, which makes it easy to under-eat protein. Losing weight quickly without enough protein and resistance training can mean losing a meaningful share of that weight as lean mass.

These guides cover the nutrition and training side only: protein targets, strength training to preserve muscle and practical ways to eat well when you are not hungry. Questions about your medication or dose belong with your prescriber.

Three things that protect muscle on a GLP-1

  1. Step 1 Hit a protein target Current guidance for people on GLP-1 therapy suggests more than 1.2 g of protein per kg of body weight a day, split across meals.
  2. Step 2 Lift to keep muscle Strength training two or more days a week is the signal that tells your body to keep muscle while you lose weight.
  3. Step 3 Eat well with less appetite Small, protein-first meals, enough fiber and fluid, and foods that go down easily on low-appetite days.

Guides

What these guides cover, and what they do not

We write about the food and exercise side of GLP-1 therapy: how much protein to eat, how to train to keep muscle, and how to eat well when you are not hungry. We do not cover doses, side-effect treatment, or which medication to take, and we do not compare medications. Those decisions belong with your prescriber.

Every guide cites peer-reviewed research or official guidelines, links to the sources, and shows when it was last updated (most recently October 18, 2026).

Frequently asked questions

Do GLP-1 medications cause muscle loss?

In the large trials, body-composition scans found that roughly a quarter to two-fifths of the weight lost was lean mass, which includes muscle, water and organ tissue. Eating enough protein and strength training are the two main ways to protect muscle.

How much protein should I eat on a GLP-1?

A 2025 clinical review recommends more than 1.2 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, distributed evenly across meals. Your dietitian may set a different target.

Should I lift weights while taking a GLP-1 medication?

For most people, yes: US guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activity on two or more days a week. Check with your doctor first if you have a heart or joint condition.

Does FitStack give advice about my medication?

No. These pages cover nutrition and exercise only. Questions about your medication, dose or side effects belong with your prescriber or pharmacist.
